Karl Lee and the Epitaphs formed in January 1963 in Welling, Kent with a line-up of Karl Lee on drums, group leader (b. Rodney Peters, 1943, Bexley, Kent, England) Chet Mason on lead vocals, congas (b. David Whittaker, 1947, Bexley, Kent, England), Del Grace on lead guitar, vocals (b. Derek Grace, 1946, Sidcup, Kent, England), Bruce Duckworth on rhythm guitar (b. 1947, Blackfen, Kent, England), Mick Kinzett on bass (b. Michael Kinzett, 1945, Sidcup, Kent, England), Mick Fletcher on organ (b. Michael Fletcher, 1948, Bexleyheath, Kent, England), Dave Rolfick on baritone sax (b. David Rolfick, 1944, Streatham, South West London, England) and Mick Lyle on alto & tenor sax (b. Michael Lyle, 1942, Battersea, South West London, England).

The group's line-up was fluid with musicians coming and going according to Del Grace.

Lee lived in Glenhurst Avenue, Bexley, Mason lived at 19 Crofton Avenue, Bexley, Grace lived in Alama Road, Sidcup, Duckworth in Blackfen Road, Blackfen, Kent, Mick Kinzett in Knoll Road, Sidcup, Fletcher in Broom Mead, Bexleyheath.

Duckworth did not stay long in the band I guess he left in 1963, and he was not replaced, so they stuck with just lead guitar.

In 1964 Grace's friend Andy Clark (b. Andrew W. Clark, 1945, The Downs, Herne Bay, Kent, England) came in on baritone sax and Mick Holland (b. Michael Holland) came in on bass so that Kinzett could become the band's road manager and manager.

Clark had two older brothers and a sister and was brought up in Blackfen, Kent and Eltham, South East London. He had a terrible accident (cycling to school) with a lorry trailer. Both legs were smashed and he spent nine months flat on his back at East Grinstead Hospital, East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Holland lived at 18 Wellington Avenue, Sidcup, Kent.

In 1964 Karl Lee and the Epitaphs became The Epitaphs.
